Twenty-five minutes.
That was how long it had been since the cryptic text from Kevyn had set his nerves on edge.
Dak looked at the text from Kevyn again, as well as the text heâd sent three minutes ago asking if everything was okay.
Still no response.
The delay could be from any number of things. Mechanical or passenger trouble on the bus. Someone stopping to talk to her. Heck, she mightâve ducked into a food place to grab some takeout before coming here.
Except that she knew he was watching the clock. Plus, she hadnât responded to his text.
Lord?
His silent prayer went up and he listened.
No booming voice from heaven, but the trepidation in his gut grew.
He needed to check on this. Check on her.
He clipped his badge to his waistband, holstered his gun, and shrugged into a plain windbreaker, one that didnât clearly identify him as FBI.
If he was overreacting, and surely he was, at least he wouldnât blow her cover.
As the elevator carried him down to street level, he brought up the recent calls to 911.
Domestic case, nope.
Car accident, nope.
More domestic.
Wait. Assault. The location was only a few blocks from here. And the address was on Kevynâs route.
The oxygen caught in his lungs.
Please God. Donât let it be her.
What did he do? Backtrack her route, as was the most logical course of action? Or go straight to the restaurant that phoned in the assault?
Backtrack.
If the assault was unrelated, backtracking assured he wouldnât miss her along the way. And if it was related to Kevynâs tardiness, then heâd only get there about a minute later than if he went straight there.
He hit the street at a jog.
In less than two minutes, he turned into the alley running alongside the restaurant that had phoned in the assault.
Yellow police tape blocked his path.
Two police cars and an ambulance were visible at the other end of the alley, where a small crowd of onlookers had gathered.
An officer approached, a cross look on his face. âSir, this is a crime scene. You need to turn aroundââ
âFBI.â Dak pulled back his jacket to show the officer his badge. âWhatâs going on here?â
What he really wanted to do was ask about the victim, but he held back. He couldnât see the victim from here. Too dark, too many people in the way. He had no way of knowing if the victim might be her. If it wasnât her, he needed to maintain some separation.
The officer stared at him for a second before responding. âSome jerk attacked a woman. Donât know exactly what happened âcause sheâs unresponsive. Restaurant worker stopped the attack and called it in.â
He glanced at the phone in his hand.
Still no response from Kevyn.
How much did he reveal?
âDid you catch the attacker?â
The officer shook his head. âWe have teams sweeping the area, but heâs probably long gone.â
Probably. âI have an agent missing. Whatâs the victimâs name?â
âShe didnât have a badge. Nameâs Karen Thompson.â
His stomach clenched and the air thickened.
âThatâs my agent.â That statement earned him an open invitation past the tape.
